Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) affects millions of Americans each year, but the journey to freedom from addiction doesn’t have to be walked alone. At 180 Ministries, a faith-based residential addiction recovery program in Colorado, we offer a safe, supportive environment for those seeking a transformed life—free from alcohol and substance use. While we are not a medical facility and do not prescribe medications, many individuals entering recovery often ask: What medications are available for Alcohol Use Disorder?
Medications That Support Recovery from Alcohol Addiction
Overcoming AUD can involve multiple layers of treatment, including therapy, spiritual guidance, community support, and in some cases, medication. Currently, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved three medications specifically for the treatment of Alcohol Use Disorder:
1. Naltrexone
Available as both a pill and an injection, Naltrexone works by reducing the cravings and urge to drink. It helps people stay focused on their recovery journey by dampening the reward response the brain associates with alcohol.
2. Acamprosate
This oral medication is designed to ease the symptoms that can occur during alcohol abstinence, such as anxiety, insomnia, or restlessness. Acamprosate helps create emotional stability and comfort during early sobriety.
3. Disulfiram
Unlike the other medications, Disulfiram serves as a deterrent. If alcohol is consumed while taking it, the person will experience highly unpleasant symptoms such as nausea and headache, effectively discouraging drinking altogether.
While these medications have proven effective for many, they are only one piece of a much bigger recovery picture. Researchers are actively working on new treatments to address the diverse biological and psychological pathways involved in addiction—further widening the tools available to those in need.
